Conservative restoration of a historic palace in the center of Carona.
The project aims to restore the original reading of the decorative apparatus, which is most prominent on the sides facing the internal courtyard and on the main entrance facade.
Through the discovery of fragments hidden beneath several layers of whitewash (scialbi), we successfully recovered elements such as stringcourses (marcapiani), corner ashlar-work (bugnati angolari), window surrounds, and pedimented lintels (cappelli a timpano). Based on these findings, a cohesive decorative scheme was developed and applied across all four elevations of the building.
The operational phases began with a biocide treatment, as the facade suffered from significant moss growth and biological colonization on all sides. This was followed by both structural and cortical consolidation.
The recovery process involved the mechanical removal of whitewash (descialbo) from all remaining decorated fragments, followed by lime-based pictorial retouching. Additionally, the project included the treatment of wooden elements and the cleaning of stone balconies. Special care was given to the half-round stuccowork depicting the faces and wings of cherubs. The intervention was completed with the restoration of the main wooden entrance door and a new decorative proposal for the rear entrance, designed to align with the pre-existing decorative order discovered during the works.
